The Bible has much to say on the topic of YOU and is the best place to turn for guidance and comfort. Use the following Bible verses and reflections to ask questions about your life. You believe in God, right? You believe God’s in charge because he’s perfect, yes? So you agree that all the things David says about God in Psalm 139 are true:
God knows everything about you (vs. 1 – 4).
God is everywhere (vs. 5 – 12).
God created your “inmost being” (vs. 13).
God has something to say about feet! Feet are symbols for our ability to stand up for what’s right.
“He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” — Psalm 40:2
“For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling.” — Psalm 56:13
God does want you to look your best. The woman of noble character described in Proverbs “is clothed in fine linen and purple” (Proverbs 31:22). And not only that, but in her household, “all of them are clothed in scarlet” (verse 21).
That doesn’t mean you have to wear the most expensive labels and always look like you just walked out of Limited Too. It means that when you put on clothes that look good and feel great on you, that says, “I want people to see the real me, a person who deserves respect.” “Best,” in God’s eyes, is different for everyone. And not only does God create you to be one of a kind, but he watches you with loving eyes, coaxing you to be who he made you to be. “[God] forms the hearts of all . . . considers everything they do” (Psalm 33:15).
“ ‘And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?’ ” — Matthew 6:28 – 30
“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment . . . Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” — 1 Peter 3:3 – 4
Whoever wants Jesus in her life, believes he is the Son of God, and does as he says; that girl will be her true self, her child-of-God self. As you go forward on the path to your God-made self, remember this passage, written by John about Christ:
“To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12
Why does God want you to see yourself so clearly? He tells us that himself:
“[God] has saved us and called us to a holy life — not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.” — 2 Timothy 1:9
If God went to all the trouble to make every one of the billions of people on the planet unique, doesn’t it make sense that God wants you to let everybody see the Holy Spirit working through that special self of yours? Check out what Jesus said in Luke 11:
”No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead, he [or she] puts it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.” — Luke 11:33
If you let anyone or anything be more important than being your God-made self, you’re pretty much telling God he doesn’t know what he’s doing! But the Bible tells us that he does:
“There’s trouble ahead when you live only for the approval of others, saying what flatters them, doing what indulges them. Popularity contests are not truth contests — look how many scoundrel preachers were approved by your ancestors! Your task is to be true, not popular.” — Luke 6:26 (The Message)
God knows better than the ugly, hateful things we say about ourselves. This is what he says:
“You are always with me, and everything I have is yours.” — Luke 15:31
“Don’t set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do . . . Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant. If you puff yourself up, you’ll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you’re content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.” — Matthew 23:11 – 12 (The Message)
“How can a young man [or young woman] keep his [or her] way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.” — Psalm119:9 – 10
